History
Shri Ram Vidya Mandir (SRVM) was established in 1992. The goal was to provide high quality education for children living in Sri Ram Ashram and surrounding villages. Before Shri Ram Vidya Mandir was established educational opportunity was limited to a small government school that offered Classes 1 to 8. Highschool education was only possible at schools 20 km away along a hilly rural road and even then, there was no opportunity for girls to pursue Science Track. As village families did not have cars and as buses did not stop near-by, only those who could afford a bicycle and could brave the road had a chance at further education. As a result, many students stopped their education after class 8, especially girls who weren’t allowed to ride bicycles such a long distance and return after dark.
SRVM began with thirteen students, half from Shyampur village, offering grades LKG through Class 1. Classes were held on the Sri Ram Ashram campus in partitioned rooms and outside when weather permitted. In 1998 the first floor of our current campus was built and in 2002 a second floor was added. Every year a grade was added, in 2003 the first batch of class 12 students graduated!
Currently SRVM has 625 students serving children of Sri Ram Ashram children and a widespread rural area. SRVM maintains four buses to transport its students. Since its humble beginnings, hundreds of students have graduated from Shri Ram Vidya Mandir, many of whom are first generation literate. Almost all have gone on to college, university, professional careers and family business, and take leadership roles to support their family and society. The opportunity for education has uplifted the local rural area supporting dreams to become reality.
